Andi's Post on Architecture

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Homes By Design: Honestly the biggest thing I learned is that I am not the only one who is claustrophobic in Frank Lloyd Wright's Homes. I've always felt bad that I can't tour more of them because I love his work and study it so often - but I have a panic attack each and every time I go in one, the ceilings are way too low for me. I never knew this was a common reaction!

The Science of Design - I was particularly interested to learn that sky scrapers can move as much as a meter in high winds, for something that solid, that is a LOT of sway!

Classical Architecture - Once again I was struck by how ancient architecture is still so evident in our cultures today. So many museums and public buildings are built in this style and were well into my lifetime. The evidence of classical architecture into our civic arenas was a topic of much discussion in my museums class about three weeks ago, so I have to say this was a re-hash of that.

Last Call for Planet Earth - That one can build buildings that will use 20-30% less energy. I also liked the concept of the living roof...it's almost a throw back to the old soddy house which was built in the pioneer days.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos seem to reinforce what the book is telling us. I found the videos much more clear though.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

I think the videos work much better to explain the concepts that we are supposed to be learning. This chapter I watched the videos then read the book, and it worked better because it gave me a better idea of what the author wanted me to "get".

4. From the group of four that you had a choice: Why did you choose that film? It seemed interesting, I like to learn about architecture and although, I will never be one, the new developments in the field fascinate me.
